Although I’m well into my 2nd Trimester I was thrilled for the opportunity to work with Saalt in celebration of not only #plasticfreejuly but also women and girls empowerment!  I’ve been a menstrual cup user for the past 3+ years but at the time of purchase, there wasn’t a lot of information and there was a lack of variety out in the market (especially with shipping to Italy). Without knowing what to look for I ended up buying a generic brand online and kept an open mind because I wanted to kickstart my sustainability journey and join the zero waste community. 

Did you know the average woman will use 12,000 – 16,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime and it can take up to 100 years or more for something like a plastic pad or applicator to breakdown!

I’m about to share some nitty-gritty details (not to gross you out) but more so to help you take practical things into consideration when picking out your menstrual cup –not all menstrual cups are made the same!

My first Menstrual Cup Experience:

My first cup had a short stem which was always such a pain (figuratively and literally speaking).  If you’re a first-time menstrual cup user, stem length matters! As you can imagine, it can get a little slippery and you need a stem you can easily locate and pull on (otherwise you can accidentally end up pinching the inside of your lady bits -OUCH if it isn’t long enough or if you push the cup up too high it’s harder to reach. 

Secondly, it needs to be soft. Comfort is key. Yes, most cups are made from medical-grade silicone, which is flexible and generally soft but each curve and shape of the cup can affect your experience and comfort level.  The rim around my first cup kind of felt a tad hard and at times during insertion and placement I’d feel some discomfort.  Since I had no previous experience in using cups, I had nothing else to compare it to, I thought all cups felt this way.  But it just isn’t true.

Although I’m preggers I was curious to feel the difference between the two cups. Although I’d say at this point I’m a pro at inserting, cup placement and removal the experience was worlds apart. 

First off, the cup stem is customizable!! I don’t need to struggle anymore ?!! You’re able to cut your stem to your desired length, so ladies rockin short and long nails win big time! Also if you decide to keep it at the longest length, the material is SO SOFT it feels like there’s nothing there! Which means even less time spent in the bathroom, for a quick change, clean and go. *They also have their own cup wash, it has a light, fresh and citrusy scent*

Saalt Material & Shape

They’ve rolled out soft cups! That being said, they sent me the regular material and it feels w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l! I don’t feel anything at all, so I can’t even imagine what the soft cups must feel like. To put my saalt cup to the test, I’ve used it while working out and it’s honestly so comfortable (it moulds better to my body) and I forget it’s even there.

One last thing to keep in mind, Saalt cups are comfortable and convenient enough that you can also use them on your light flow days (say goodbye to removing dry tampons) or dare I say it got some extra discharge going on. Yep, I went there because there ain’t no shame in the menstrual game #periodproud #ditchthedisposables
